Dan Santat is the illustrator. I love his work. This story was cute. I love the hearts and red and pink and flowers and candy of Valentine's. I was still able to enjoy this book. This boy does not like anything about the day. He is Crankenstein. I love the Valentine's play. It turns out the best part of the day is finding someone who can relate to you - a friend.

The artwork was amazing and the story was entertaining. It ends up being a little touching. This is for younger readers.

Crankenstein Valentine had me cracking up as I read it. Crankstein hates everything to do with Valentine's day including underwear with little hearts on it, coconut chocolate, roses, Valentine cards and garlands. Until he notices a female classmate that hates Valentine's day as much as he does.

Very cute and highly recommend.

I was doing a Valentine's Day family storytime at my job and wanted to find books that weren't your typical, mushy, gross, kissy-face, yechhhh, and Crankenstein was the perfect book for that. It's nearly an anti-Valentine's Day book for kids that still comes with a happy ending. The illustrations are amazing and the kids loved screaming "YECHHH!" in my face. I can't recommend it enough. Crankenstein is not very happy to be participating in all the valentine's day activities in his life but what will make him not cranky someone just like him. Liked that it showed many aspects of valentine's day.

What a fun book! I had to read it twice to make sure I had it right because the appearance of a second crankenstein confused me at first. This story makes St. Valentines Day less threatening for the romantically shy (for all ages too ;)

Such a sweet thing to say. But for Crankenstein, does the sentence hold true?

Funny story where Crankenstein does NOT like Valentine's Day. We see him doing all different Valentine's Day activities and his same response is, "Yechhh!" It's definitely a laugh out loud book for students. There are funny rhyming valentines and even heart underwear. I appreciate the the end pages have conversation hearts with more negative comments: cooties, blah, dry heave, scram, etc. In the end, Crankenstein finds someone who understands him. It's about a day when a boy turns into a grump because it is valentines day. He hates everything that he has to be involved in because everyone one is in the valentines mood until he met someone who felt the exact same way as him. Since then he was enjoying disliking valentines day with his friend, and now he can not wait until th next one which is 364 days later.
The book was filled wit red and pink for love and cuteness, and that is what he hated, i saw green an green usually means nature but

The book was filled wit red and pink for love and cuteness, and that is what he hated, i saw green an green usually means nature but this green was very dark and showed that Crankenstein was the grump and th one who did not like it just by his color. Another thing was the text it fit just right with the images. The text would get bigger when they would yell or when something amazing would happen. The type of lines on his eyebrows were easily told if he was upset or he was just cranky. But when he was having fun and comfortable hating it with his friend he became looking like a normal child not green. It shows the differences in characters and who liked it or who did not like it.
I loved the book, i enjoyed how they made a love story with an antagonist become loving that day but for a different reason. It teaches the kids a lesson that you can still love a day you hate by enjoying it with a friend. I also liked how they were easily told on who was the main character and then how two had something in common and how they found each other. It can teach many lessons and a different prospective of what can occur on special occasions.

Identification of Opening Moves
1. Prompt brief sharing of personal experiences related to the topic or theme
2. Activate background knowledge
3. Prompt predictions based on title
4. Draw attention to writer or illustrator's craft

Rationale
I selected "A Crankenstein Valentine" as my final installment for my text set on the theme of love. This text does a wonderful job engaging students by following the character Crankenstein, a boy who really hates Valentine's Day. As students have previously considered point-of-view, this will further allow students to understand differing opinions and how to express opinions. The text also does a great job introducing students to onomatopoeia.

He's back, and he's crankier than ever! After all, it's Valentines! Crankenstein's new word of choice is "Yech!", and with all the love in the air, he has many opportunities to use it. Yet, there on the page is another green-skinned goblin, another who despises all the gushy, mushy stuff, and while love doesn't blossom, a friendship does. All of Crankenstein's gloriously expressive, and outrageously unimpressed faces return, including the Grinch smile. Changes to the word bubbles add that little extra detail which completes the overall feel, and the composition between these and the pictures is perfectly laid out to maximize the humour. Both parents and children alike will enjoy watching this child's temper tantrums. ...more

Sometimes we just don't want to participate in certain holidays! In this children's book, a young boy doesn't want to do all the normal Valentine's Day activities, like acting in a Valentine's Day pageant or making a Valentine's Day paper chain. His bad mood is accented by the illustrator coloring him green and making him look like a little monster. His mood eventually improves when he finds a friend that also doesn't like Valentine's Day.

This is a great book for any kid that takes a dislike to Valentine's Day or think it's an icky, muchy holiday. It'll probably get some smiles out of some boys and girls if read to a kindergarten or first grade class. Also, obviously, it's great for Valentine's Day!

I really connect with the face Crankenstein makes when he bites into "the chocolate with surprise hairy coconut inside." Hairy coconut chocolates are some of my least favorite!! This would make an excellent read-aloud for younger children.

I just read this book an hour ago and loved it. I run a non-profit Project Valentine. We give 500 - 600 gift bags each year to patients who are having chemo on or around Valentine's Day.
My children's hospital requested that one of the 6 yr old girls I will be delivering to is "not girlie" and could we please make her a boys bag.
While picking up gift certificates at our local book store Tattered Cover, this book caught my eye. I thought it would be perfect for this little gal who probably has to

Lots of laughs and lots of truth in this book.

I wish we'd had this one in when I did our Valentine's Day story time at the library. All of the choices were pretty gross (and heteronormative, but that's a tangent for another day). This was really cute and perfect for kids who think Valentine's Day is a puke-y annoying holiday. I also enjoyed that the central message is about friendship and not romance - especially as the wee ones can be a little squicked out/confused about the mushier books. I seriously can't get over Dan Santat's insanely awesome illustrations for these books! Loved it!!

For a variety of reasons not all people enjoy this day of hearts, flowers, sweet treats and symbols of love. In fact some singular individuals find it disgusting. The green-faced grump we met and loved in Crankenstein has returned in A Crankenstein Valentine (Little, Brown and Company, December 16, 2014) written by Samantha Berger with illustrations by Dan Santat. His loathing for this day equals laughter for readers.

Secretly, I think we all have a hidden Crankenstein within. Perhaps not towards Valentine's Day, but there has to be something that everyone else loves that you can't stand, but might come around under the right conditions. Of all the holidays though, I can understand why Crankenstein would be a little grumpy. A perfect book for storytime and full of craft ideas, this is a fun holiday book.
